When I think of all the things that I have longed to photograph. At the top of my list has to be modern architecture. Do you think out of the box to create a cool piece of art when you shoot? I want to go out and start creating images that will transcend the norm. I was shopping in a the Home Depot the other day picking up items for a boring home improvement project. And as usual my mind started to wonder as I was thinking of photography. Eventually I found myself in front of the welding supplies in the hardware department. As I was looking at all the items on the shelves I got this crazy idea about using the glass from welders helmet as an extreme neutral density filter. The darkness of the the glass was going to mean really cool long exposures even in the middle of the day however the tint of the glass was precluding any type of neutral color-shift during the exposure. But then it came to me that I could set my Canon 5D Mark 2 picture settings to monochrome and shoot in black and white. As I predicted even in the middle of the day at an iso of 100 using my method your exposures can be 1 to 2 minutes or more. I thought I would try this method on some architectural subjects. While still in the testing stages I believe this is a practice of shooting that will appeal to me for some time down the road.
